Through the camera lens

A photography exhibition capturing the history of Malayalam cinema, stepping to its 90’s, was
conducted at Kanakakkunnu palace. The exhibition organised under the auspices of Kerala State
Chalachitra Academy and Film Corporation was inaugurated by actor Madhu. The rare moments of the
film sector captured by still photographer P. David were incorporated in the exhibition. Madhu
honoured David, who crossed 50 years in still photography with shawl.  Actor Madhu felt ecstatic on
watching 90 years of Malayalam cinema at a glimpse. Director Sreekumaran Thampy opined that
documents are archetypes of Malayalam Cinema history. ‘Smaranika’ the souvenir analyzing the annual activities of Chalachitra Academy was released. Thampy handed over the copy to actor
Sheela. ‘Ormachitrangal’ encompassing the location stills of various films from Bhargavi Nilayam,
Ahimsa, Sathi, Amaram and the shooting moments of actors including Sathyan, Vincent,
Rajinikanth, John Abraham, I.V.Sasi, was inaugurated by Sheela.
Another attraction is the category devoted to the exhibition of cinema equipment that brought the early
day Malayalam films from the locations to the screens of theatres. The history of Malayalam cinema
with the aid of technological advancements, will endow a gateway for the spectators to see the camera
models. From the ‘Debris’ camera model, used in the 1928 release Vigathakumaran, the first silent
movie, to ‘Aries Plex 16’, and ‘Rolex’, the display is a multifarious collection.
